Letter to the Editor - from Ross Douglas, London, ON re: “BMO Amatour London, Ontario"

December 29, 2018

alt

The picture brings back a lot of memories and how much fun it was travelling to the different courses.  I believe this picture is from Fanshawe Course in London.  I found one of the visors that we wore and the date was 1984, and it is hard to believe that the time has flown by so quickly. The only other bit of information is I never won any tournaments and I don’t think there were any holes in one.

We are fortunate to have monthly luncheons now during the fall and winter months and see lots of the guys.  Chuck Joynt does a good job organizing these luncheons.

Ross Douglas

If you have any comments regarding this letter, please contact the BMO Cyber Pensioners News team at cyberpensioner@gmail.com We look forward to hearing from you."

BMO Amatour London, Ontario

December 23, 2018

alt

I ran across this picture and thought I would resend it. This is a picture of the golf Amatour that Ross Douglas organized in the London area back in the 70's. We toured several courses in the London area and had a great time.  Many of the guys still get together regularly for luncheons.  Ross is the good looking guy in the front row left side.

Thanks Ron Patterson for sharing.

BC Lower Mainland Christmas Luncheon

December 21, 2018

alt

The annual Christmas lunch was held at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver on Friday, November 30th with approximately 290 pensioners attending.  The day started off with an opportunity to mingle and catch up with friends followed by a delicious turkey lunch.  Many of those attending went home with door prizes as well as the table centrepieces.  Aaron Kueng and Michael Wood acted as MCs and we had short talks from BOMPA President Clive Hanbury and Mike Bonner, SVP BC and Yukon Division.  Following the meeting, Earl was busy taking new BOMPA memberships and collecting dues from existing members.  Please consider joining BOMPA and attending our regular lunches.  New events are being planned for the upcoming year.

Thanks to Mike Bonner and BMO for hosting the annual event.

Fourth annual BMO retiree Christmas luncheon was held on Friday, December 14th at The Palladium Family Restaurant in Cole Harbour. We had a great turnout with 53 in attendance. Our meal choices were excellent and everyone enjoyed the meet and greet. The opportunity to catch up with old friends is very special and even more so during the Holiday Season. Our thanks to Mother Nature for a good travel day. Thanks also to Debbie MacNeil for taking the time to once again organize this event.

Letter from the Editor: Reflections on the year 2018

December 15, 2018

alt By Dave Harmer, Editor

2018 is winding down. As is our custom, we like to look back and reflect on what has happened this year in our cyber community.

I have been impressed by the sheer magnitude of events, meetings, lunches, the larger Christmas luncheons and other social activities we have seen posted on our website this year. Our thanks go to individual members, our Regional Representatives and various pensioner associations for the announcements, reporting and photography sent to us for publication.

These events and activities are almost all organized and run by individual retirees or teams - and sometimes by employees of the bank - for the enjoyment of bank pensioners in locations all across the country. Large and small, formal and informal, these events do not just happen and their success is mostly due to the efforts of volunteers which I believe is very much appreciated.

Our network of members continues to grow each year and stands at 3,100 at the time of writing. 251 retirees chose to join us so far this year.To put this into perspective, while our website is also viewed by others, impressively an approximate 30% of bank retirees now belong to our network with 32% of our members also being Facebook "friends". Members come from all parts of the country, parts of the United States and overseas. We wonder how many other similar sized volunteer organizations can boast those numbers! Word of mouth continues to be one of the largest sources of new members and is almost matching new membership attributed to the various luncheons. Our thanks go to those who have encouraged retirees to join our ranks.

Unfortunately 21 members passed away so far this year, although these are only ones that we heard about. We were sad to hear, not only about those members, but also other colleagues and friends within the BMO community who passed away in 2018. In various ways each made their contribution to the lives of people around them and they will be missed both as colleagues and friends. Our thoughts continue to be with their families and friends coping with their loss.

Our thanks must go to Barry Gemmell and Jim O'Neill who, back in 1991, had the vision of an interconnected cyber network. Together with the other members of our Hall of Fame they laid the foundations for the unique network we have today and we can only say to them "look at what you started!" It would be remiss of me not to say how much all members of the cyber pensioners team deserve much credit for their work in keeping the website alert and well on a daily basis.

On a personal note I would like to express my appreciation to both Colin Evans and Joan Mesic. For the last 6 months or so, they have held the Cyber Pensioner (CP) editorial "fort" for me as my wife and I embarked on our hectic, often frustrating and occasionally humorous adventure of selling our house, then buying and finally moving to a new home.

As always we would like to wish all our readers and their families the best for the upcoming holiday season and thank you for your help in making this unique website and network available to our members across the country and beyond. We hope you will continue to keep us in mind in 2019.

BMO Communications - Prevention of Cyber Crime

December 8, 2018

alt

The holiday season is an opportune time for cyber criminals to attack shoppers and travelers around the world. Since 2014, the total value of online retail sales has almost doubled to $2,489 Trillion. Cyber-crime experts report that as e-commerce increases, high-activity seasons like the holidays will not only trigger more attacks, but inspire new types of attacks.

BMO Communications has posted security tips on the BMO Retiree Portal. Click Here to read these tips.
