May 2, 2018

by Joan Mesic, Senior Correspondent

On April 11, 2018 Mr. Freeman Clowery, former Corporate Archivist, Bank of Montreal, passed away at the age of 95 in Sherbrooke (Lennoxville), Quebec. Mr. Clowery's obituary was posted on our website in the "In Memoriam" section, April, 2018. Mr. Clowery was a unique individual with a penchant for collecting all kinds of things. His generous donation of his personal collection of the medals of the Governers General of Canada personifies his interest in preserving history through artifacts.  He was well-known and liked in the Sherbrooke area. The Stanley Cup Ring and Chris Hayes

April 18, 2018

by Joan Mesic, Senior Correspondent

Harry Quart one of our BMO Cyber Pensioners brought to our attention the newspaper article about Chris Hayes, BMO pensioner, and how "46 years later, Stanley Cup ring arrives in the mail at the Chapeau home of Chris Hayes".  This is a heart-warming, good news story which we know you will enjoy.  I also had a conversation with Chris to chat about some of his BMO career.

IMPORTANT UPDATE - BMO's Family Day at Canada's Wonderland

April 17, 2018

For the first time in 38 years of BMO’s Family Day at Canada’s Wonderland they need to cancel our event due to the devastation the park has been hit with during the recent ice storm. International Showplace has caved in and the park is just not in any position to host BMO or BNS this weekend.

That said, anyone who have purchased tickets will receive an email that their ticket will be valid any day they choose and if they purchased the BBQ they will be provided with a link to be able to use towards another restaurant in the park.

To bee or not to bee.  An experiment ...... but is there a sting in this tale?

April 12. 2018

By Dave Harmer, Editor

The last couple of years the decline of the bee population started us thinking about how we could encourage more of these pollinators, and especially Mason bees, into our kitchen garden. Our local mill has all sorts of hives and equipment, but the thought of stumbling around in a bee hazmat suit brandishing a smoker - besides worrying the neighbours - was just not "on"!

This year Mason bees have become the "in thing".  People have been observed leaving garden centres clutching Mason bee houses full of removable nesting tubes. But hold on. It may not be as simple as just putting the houses up. To find out more CLICK HERE.

BMO and Curling

April 4, 2018

by Joan Mesic, Senior Correspondent

The genesis of sports can be traced to prehistoric cave paintings depicting pictures of sprinting, wrestling, swimming, archery and more.  Although, curling is not in the top list of the oldest sports in the world, its origins date back approximately 400 years. In the 1800’s the ice game played with stones was developed in Scotland and became a national sport.

Curling is a popular sport of many people including those in the Bank of Montreal going back to 1817 and beyond. Some of BMO shareholders, including Thomas Turner, the first Vice-President of Bank of Montreal, were affiliated with the Royal Montreal Curling Club, the oldest curling club in North America, located in Montreal, founded in 1807.  The club was founded ten years before Bank of Montreal began operations.

To read more about the history of this sport, please CLICK HERE

If you have any stories about curling and would like to share them, please contact the BMO Cyber Pensioners News team at cyberpensioner@gmail.com We look forward to hearing from you.
